This is one of Carl Andre's word poems and was made as a commentary on David Novros' exhibition of paintings at the Dwan Gallery, New York, in April 1967. Each half consists of the same sequence of words, but in the lower half the order of the words is reversed and the letters are the other way round - a structure which echoes Novros' preoccupation with the interlocking, repetition, inversion etc. of simple shaped canvases such as L-shapes. Andre writes that 'Three separate word arrays were published as reviews of 3 separate shows of paintings by Novros, Marden, and Mogensen in the 57th Street Review, a mimeographed flyer of the time'. (Letter of 23 September 1977).
