On the reverse is a pencil drawing of the same scene from a different angle, inscribed ‘Edward Bawden 1958, Caradon No.2, Minions, Cornwall’ b.r.
The artist wrote (16 August 1959): ‘The painting was done in April 1958. It was painted in one session, which is not my usual practice, in fact exceptional, but it was a very cold morning & the weather was uncertain. This location is near Minions, a hamlet on the Bodmin moors about five miles from Liskeard.’ He added (1 September 1959): ‘The Caradon mines lie at the base of the Caradon hill & in relation to this painting they are, so to speak, behind the spectator. A little of the rubbish from the mines creeps into the foreground.’
