Pre-Raphaelite artists travelled in Italy in the 1860s, exploring the beauty of Renaissance art. John Brett spent the winters of 1861–63 in Florence. Jeannette Loeser was a member of the English-Florentine intellectual circle and earned her own money. Brett painted her mature profile and grey hair true to life. The dove theme and the cherubs on the frame reference the romantic relationship between Loeser and the artist.
