This is a reduced-size version of 'The Shore at Scheveningen' (1659) by the Dutch seventeenth-century artist Willem van de Welde the Younger (1633-1707). It is not an exact copy. The relationship between the figures on the shore and the boats at sea has been altered, as have other details. It is possible that it was painted immediately following one of the annual old master exhibitions held by the British Institution in its galleries in Pall Mall. Students and professional artists were allowed to study selected pictures in a 'school', which opened after the exhibitions had finished.
Gallery label, April 1993
