Display caption

John Fleming, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, was a leading Scottish aristocrat and politician active in the court of King James VI of Scotland and I of England, and his son Charles I. As such he spent time in both Edinburgh and London. The portrait of his wife (hanging nearby) does not look towards him suggesting that although they were painted in the same year they were not devised as a pair. As de Colone worked in both London and Edinburgh it may be that he painted them separately, or that they were intended for separate locations.
