Display caption
Alfred East was one of the most acclaimed academic landscape painters of the late Victorian and Edwardian era. He usually worked on a large scale, as exemplified by this exhibition picture, paid great attention to detail, and almost invariably adopted a low horizon. East’s landscapes were usually generalised ones, and appealed to a wide audience. The title reveals his focus on mood and season rather than topography and the site represented in Golden Autumn has not been identified.
