This work appears to have been painted in June or July 1934 in Hampstead. Gertler wrote to Thomas Balston on 6 July 1934 that he would be leaving for a holiday in Spain on 12 July. On 5 October he wrote to him again: ‘I am very glad you chose the Mandolinist – it is the last thing I did before the holiday and one of my favourites. You must have noticed that I’ve kept it considerably higher in key than the others-with I think a satisfactory result. The little one is not a sketch – it is as finished as any of them and one of the most beautiful things in the show...’
