Gleizes’s abstract paintings tend to retain strong links with the figures or still life subject matter that inspired them. Here the image may be based on a female head, possibly that of the artist’s wife. According to this interpretation, the central image is frontal, showing the face in a fashionable cloche hat with a scarf; the second concentric set is the head again, closer, and the third gives an idea of the hair, concealed in the hat.
