(Native Woman) 1940
Inscribed '8-5-40 | J.G.' b.r.
Pen and wash on paper, 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 (31.7 x 24.2)
Presented by Roberta González 1972
Lit: Josette Gibert, Julio González Dessins: Nus (Paris 1975), p.103 repr.
Gibert, op. cit., p.103 reproduces an undated pen and wash drawing closely related to this but more tentative, which appears to have been done as a preliminary study. There is an unfinished pencil drawing of a head on the verso which resembles several studies of heads dating from the same month (cf. Gibert, J.G. Dessins: Scènes Paysannes, pp.326-7, particularly 'Head' p.327, dated 24 May 1940).
[All the drawings by Julio González given to the Tate are authenticated on the back by his daughter Roberta González and inscribed with a title and date, or approximate date. The titles are used in the catalogue entries, but the dating has been made more precise wherever possible. (Julio González's drawings are usually dated from about 1934 onwards, but the great majority of the early drawings are undated).]
