In addition to the series on the occupation of the land, Guttuso made, particularly from 1945 to 1953, a number of works based on the life and popular struggles of the Sicilian peasants. These included paintings and drawings of cart-drivers, fishermen and sulphur miners (sulphur is mined principally in Caltanissetta and Girgenti, and in minor quantities in Palermo and Catania).
