In addition to the series on the occupation of the land, Guttuso made, particularly from 1945 to 1953, a number of works based on the life and popular struggles of the Sicilian peasants. These included paintings and drawings of cart-drivers, fishermen and sulphur miners (sulphur is mined principally in Caltanissetta and Girgenti, and in minor quantities in Palermo and Catania). The oil paintings of sulphur miners include one of 1948 in the National Gallery in Prague.
