P07551 [from] LITHOGRAPHS BY WILLIAM JOHNSTONE WITH POEMS BY EDWIN MUIR 1981 [P07534-P07554]
Each inscribed ‘William Johnstone’ and (on colophon) ‘18’
Twenty-one lithographs, printed at the Printmakers' Workshop, Edinburgh, published by the artist in an edition of 50, each 12 3/4×20 1/8 (32.5×51)
Purchased from the artist (Grant-in-Aid) 1981
The twenty poems were hand-set and printed letterpress at Pillans and Wilson, Edinburgh; design and typography was by James Gardiner Associates, Edinburgh. Johnstone and Muir were close friends for many years and Johnstone had thought about making a set of lithographs with Muir's poems for a long time, but when the images were being produced they were, in most cases, drawn very quickly.
