Donald Judd was one of the major figures of Minimal Art. He was a writer on art as well as a sculptor, and preferred to describe himself as a maker of 'specific objects'. His reliefs, freestanding objects, furniture and works on paper are notable for their radical simplicity. His work generally involves single rectangular units or horizontal or vertical progressions of rectangular units, often made by commercial fabricators under his instruction. Despite his insistence that his work had no reference to things outside itself, it is distinguished by great beauty in the simplicity of its form, and sensuousness in the richness of its surface values.
