For the artist's wife see No.4749. Their three children, also shown in the painting, are Henrietta (b. 1931), Felicia (b. 1933) and Valentine (b. 1939). The artist worked on the picture for some time, using oil sketches such as ‘Mother and Two Children’, exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, December 1961 (71, repr.), and another in the Collection of Lord Shuttleworth (letters from the artist's widow of 30 October 1961 and 5 December 1961).
