Lewis was interested in the instinctive behaviour of people in crowds. Here, red stick-like figures appear in groups all over the composition; two wield a red flag while a third waves a tricolour flag, perhaps implying the existence of opposing political factions. This painting was also shown under the title Revolution. The overall composition seems to speak of the way individuals become standardised and dwarfed by the massive machinery of the architecture of the city. Like armies of ants, perhaps.
