This drawing relates to a series of large-scale works called 'Men in the Cities' in which single figures derived from photographs are depicted against blank backgrounds. The subjects were often friends of the artist, but they represented a generation of Americans which he referred to as 'doomed souls' and 'fallen angels'. The awkward postures of the figures suggest the intervention of hidden chaotic forces. The frozen-in-time character of the poses relates these images to film stills. In fact Longo compared the creation process to that of motion picture production, although the end result was in effect a 'non-motion' picture.
