Trellis could be considered Jeremy Moon’s first grid painting. Moon was included in the Young Contemporaries exhibition in London the same year and began teaching at Chelsea and St Martin’s schools of art. In this work the use of a white grid and contrasting black dots makes both elements appear to float free of the yellow field. Although Moon frequently created optical effects he avoided the more overt Op art techniques practised by artists such as Bridget Riley.
