Roderic O’Conor 1860–1940

T00820 Les Toits Rouges (Red Roofs) circa 1894

Inscr. ‘R. O’Conor’ b.l.
Canvas, 12½ x 15¾ (32 x 40).
Purchased from Roland, Browse and Delbanco (Florence Fox Bequest) 1966.
Coll: Georges Chaudet; M. D. Malingue; Roland, Browse and Delbanco 1962.
Exh: Gauguin et ses Amis, Pont Aven, 1961 (134); O’Conor – Norman Adams, Roland, Browse and Delbanco, April–May 1964 (5).

Probably a view in Brittany, at Pont-Aven, where O’Conor spent much of his time from about 1892 until the early 1900s. He was on friendly terms with members of Gauguin’s circle there such as Armand Seguin, and from 1894–5 with Gauguin himself, but this particular work is in fact closer in style to Van Gogh.

Published in The Tate Gallery Report 1965–1966, London 1967.
