This is one of a series of compositions begun in 1959, combining fine lines and broader bands of colour on irregularly shaped raised grounds. Linear Motif in Black and White would appear to develop the idea of movement, with the projected relief adding an extra spatial ambiguity. In such works Pasmore explored the theme of movement and growth, which had first appeared in his work in the 1940s, through the use of line to create a sense of organic flow.
