As a young man, Rainer became fascinated with Surrealist art, and the depiction of fantastical landscapes. Many of his early works were densely-worked, obsessively detailed portrayals of imaginary worlds. In this lithograph, recognisably human figures appear alongside disembodied eyes and more abstracted biomorphic shapes to create a claustrophobic, nightmarish quality
