Presented by Sir John Rothenstein through the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1981
‘English Portraits’ was issued in twelve parts with a pair of lithographs in each. The subjects of the present twelve are: Sir Frederick Pollock and Thomas Hardy (Part I), Sir Francis Seymour Haden and William Archer (Part II), The Right Reverend Dr Creighton and the Marchioness of Granby (Part III), Robert Bridges and Alphonse Legros (Part VII), Charles Villiers Stanford and George Bernard Shaw (Part VIII), Mrs Meynell and Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon (Part IX). The portraits were drawn between 1897 and 1898; the edition was 750 but many of them were destroyed by a fire at the binders and only a small proportion of that number appeared.
