Acclaimed as ‘the picture of the year’ in 1920, this portrait brought the artist into great prominence and led to much speculation concerning the sitter, who was an artist's model and was said to have been formerly on the stage. The donor was an old friend and patron of the artist, to whom he had sat for his portrait in 1902.
