Pencil, 30×21 1/4 (76·5×54).
Purchased from the artist (Grant-in-Aid) 1962.
Exh: New Art Centre, May 1961 (22).

The artist wrote (30 June and 3 July 1962) that this was the first drawing she made after moving into her country house in Wiltshire just over a year before. The gnarled tree root was brought to her by a woman from a near-by farm, hence the title.
