T03657 Interior with Self-Portrait and Two Women
Conté crayon on paper 16 3/4 × 12 1/2 (425 × 320)
Presented anonymously in memory of Terence Rattigan 1983
Prov: Mrs Serena Hobbs, widow of the artist; the donor 1967
When the donor acquired this drawing from the artist's wife, she referred to it under the provisional title ‘Artist and Model’. She told the donor that the male figure was a self-portrait of the artist, even though he did have a habit of portraying himself as much fatter than he was in actuality. Mrs Hobbs was asked if this squared-up drawing was ever worked up into an oil painting and she thought not.
