Watercolour, and pen and ink, 6¿ x 18¿ (15.5 x 47.5).
Presented by the National Art-Collections Fund from the Herbert Powell Bequest 1967.

On the back of the mount, which is contemporary with the drawing, is this inscription, presumably in Towne’s hand: ‘No 3 A View at Ambleside in Westmorland near Sir Michael Flemings in the road to Keswick drawn on the spot by Francis Towne’. The drawing is on two joined pages of a sketchbook. Other drawings from Towne’s Lakes sketchbook were, in 1920, in the possession of Miss E and the Rev M D Buckingham, the Misses Merivale, Mr Reginald Merivale and Mrs Solly. The sketchbook itself also belonged to the Misses Merivale (A P Oppe, ‘Francis Towne, Landscape Painter’, in Walpole Society, VIII, 1920, p. 120.)
