After Joseph Mallord William Turner, Aldborough, Suffolk 1827
Display caption
The town's abbey, windmill and Martello tower are prominent in this scene, but emphasis is given to the fishermen preparing to set sail for the day's catch. The rich glow of the sunrise reflected
in the still water is beautifully captured
in the engraving.
Edward Goodall, the engraver of Aldborough, was one of the ablest interpreters of Turner's work. He had previously worked with Turner on the Southern Coast, going on to produce
four of the published plates for England and Wales.
