Few impressions were taken from the 'Little Liber' plates during Turner's lifetime, and these are now very rare. The plates themselves, however, remained in Turner's studio until they were sold after his death. They were subsequently used to make a number of prints during the second half of the nineteenth century, but by then their surfaces had eroded and the later impressions often suffer from the type of blemishes seen on the example shown here.
