Display caption

Turner's alternative notes for a title for this classical composition incorporate ideas of national pride and independent identity at a time when Greece was enslaved by the Turks. The ironic contrast with modern Greece is implicit, and anticipates Byron's poignant comparisons in 'Childe Harold'.
