Catalogue entry

Although a less evolved drawing than that showing the church from the opposite side on folio 84 recto (D00990; Turner Bequest XXXIV 80), this study reflects Turner’s recurrent interest in the effect of a grand medieval building soaring above small houses clustered round it. He had, for example, viewed Ely Cathedral similarly on his Midland tour of 1794; see Tate D00351 (Turner Bequest XXI X).
