Throughout this series on dark blue paper, Turner repeatedly characterised the colours and outlines of the hills lining the Mosel, paying particular attention to the redness of their sandstone and the craggy outcrops of rocks. This is interspersed with occasional clumps of trees or bushes. This work may show the view looking downstream towards Piesport with its eighteenth-century church situated almost on the river bank.
