The sketch depicts the view looking south-west towards Villa Medici and the distant dome of St Peter’s from a point near the Porta Pinciana and the gardens of the Villa Borghese. The building in the bottom right-hand corner appears to be the Casino di Raffaello, the subject of a sketch on the following page, see folio 44 verso (D16233; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 43a). A similar view can be found on folio 45 verso (D16235; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 44a).
