Catalogue entry

This sketch of St Peter’s is taken from the north-west, possibly from an area of pine wood at the foot of Monte Mario known as the Pineta Sacchetti. To the right of Michelangelo’s famous dome can be seen two towers and part of an ancient wall which marks the western tip of the Vatican complex, see folios 7 and 7a (D16169 and D16170). The view continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 8 verso (D16173).
