Catalogue entry

This study, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, has much in common with the drawings that Turner made in the Life Classes at the Royal Academy through much of the 1790s, and it was probably done there. It may also relate to his ideas for a picture of a shipwreck, as suggested by the sketches of men on rocks on folios 41 verso–42 recto (D00322, D00323).
