With the Good Samaritan copied on folio 59 verso of this sketchbook (D04352), this picture (Mauritshuis, The Hague) is no longer accepted as Rembrandt’s own work although it was sufficiently admired to be removed by the French from Holland in 1795 and displayed in the Louvre until 1815 when it was returned to The Hague. Kitson found it ‘comforting’ that Turner commented on both pictures only briefly compared to his more rigorous analysis of Tobias and the Angel on folio 60 verso (D04354).
