Catalogue entry

Rendered in slight and cursory line, these sketches show the remains of the ancient Roman Gorze aqueduct at Ars-sur-Moselle near Metz (see also Tate D19699–D19704; Turner Bequest CCXVI 75a–78). At far right Turner has inscribed ‘[...] Equal to 4’. Though the first word is illegible, the artist may well be referring to the number of arches on the aqueduct or perhaps a ratio of some sort.
