References

Turner's inscription identifying the subject of this drawing appears to have been mistakenly added to another sheet (Tate D00132; Turner Bequest XII C). The study, an early example of Turner’s pre-eminence as a perspective draughtsman in the mid-1790s, was used as the basis for a finished watercolour of about 1794 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London).1 See also Tate D00374 (Turner Bequest XXIII A), a virtually finished colour study of the same subject.

Technical notes:

The sheet has formerly been folded vertically about 40 mm from the right-hand edge. A large oil stain in the centre of the sheet has recently been removed.
