This work by one of the founder members of the Old Watercolour Society is an outstanding example of the early nineteenth-century exhibition watercolour. On a large scale and with its grandiose, Poussinesque composition, classical buildings and monumental figures, it perfectly summarises the aspirations of heroic, classical and literary themes. It was purchased at the Society's fourth exhibition in 1808 by the distinguished patron, connoisseur and proponent of neo-classicism, Thomas Hope.
