During the 1950s, alongside his commercial illustrations, Warhol began to experiment with different techniques and modes of expression. His work from this period includes gold leaf, marbled paper and rubber-stamps. In this study he has combined areas of paint with abstract stencilled shapes created with black spray-paint.
