The plates for these small etchings were made between 1942 and 1951 and some were printed as illustrations to texts by contemporary writers. They show Wols's late manner in which the image is a record of a spontaneous engagement with the medium, a process which throws up images suggestive of botanical and biological forms as well as purely abstract compositions. In the last decade of his life he was centrally involved in the development of 'Informal', 'Gestural' abstraction in Paris.
