This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably during the same visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection. There are a few drawings identified as East Cowes interiors (see also Tate D20852, D22690, D22694, D22705, D22761; CCXXVII a 49, CCXLIV 28, 32, 43, 99).
Described as a ‘drawing room’ scene by Finberg,1 the interior here has been identified by Ian Warrell as the house’s library;2 compare the ink drawing D20852 and see also the colour studies D24864 and D22705, which also include groups of male and female figures.
