Magland is in the Arve valley between Cluses and Sallanches. As he approached the Mont Blanc massif, Turner was now making many more drawings in his larger St Gothard and Mont Blanc sketchbook (Tate D04590–D04648; D41390–D41391; Turner Bequest LXXV). His study of ‘The Aiguillette, Valley of Cluses’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester), a view of the peak of La Croix de Fer, was made from Oex, between Magland and Sallanches. Here, Turner is looking back towards Cluses, for which see especially folio 49 of this sketchbook (D04444) and also folios 50–2 (D004445–D04447).
