This page contains several studies of antique sculpture, including figures from relief fragments. The source of the collection is unidentified but the objects were almost certainly seen in Tivoli and probably relate to other sketches of sculptural fragments within this sketchbook, see folios 61–62 verso (D15040–D15043). Turner was fascinated by classical statuary and made numerous studies during his 1819 tour of Italy. The most extensive series can be found within the Vatican Fragments sketchbook (see Tate; Turner Bequest CLXXX).
