(main sketch) Details of the carved tomb of Thomas Balsall below Shakespeare’s Monument in the sanctuary of Holy Trinity Church at Stratford-upon-Avon.1 The relationship of Balsall’s floor-tomb to Shakespeare’s Monument is recorded on the facing page (29189; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 80a). See Introduction to the sketchbook for the presence of a small run of sketches at Stratford dating from 1833, as well as the majority of subjects from 1836 including the following.
ii. (left, drawn with the page upright) A town in an Alpine Valley, possibly from above Sallanches in the Arve Valley.
