Following on from the view from the north on folio 1 of the sketchbook (D06072), this is a view from a little more to the west, from Romney Lock Island. The State Apartments are seen on the left. Compare the similar view in the Wey, Guildford sketchbook (Tate D06343–D06342: Turner Bequest XCVIII 129–128a). Butlin and Joll note that ‘the same general view’ appears in the background of Ploughing up Turnips near Slough (Tate N00486)1 exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1809.
