Turner turned the sketchbook to landscape format to make this drawing. His remarks on the picture were made on folio 60 (D04353). With the Susanna drawn on folio 61 (D04355), the picture is no longer accepted as Rembrandt’s (Rembrandt van Rijn 1606–69) own work; while Bachrach considers Turner ‘brashly dealt with’ these pictures, Kitson found it ‘comforting’ that Turner commented on them only briefly compared to his more rigorous analysis of the autograph Archangel Raphael Leaving Tobit and his Family on folio 60 verso (D04354), though in fact his notes on the Samaritan, also autograph, are of similar length.
