Correggio’s (Antonio Allegri, called Correggio circa 1495–1534) picture of the Virgin and Child with St Jerome, Mary Magdalen and the infant St John the Baptist (‘Il Giorno’) was commissioned for a family chapel in Sant’Antonio, Parma in 1523. One of the most famous Grand Tour sights of the eighteenth century it was an obvious candidate for French plunder in 1796 and a great trophy. It was returned in 1815 (Parma, Galleria Nazionale). For Turner’s notes on it see folios 34, 33 verso of this sketchbook (D04318, D04317), and also folios 71 verso, 72 verso of his Small Calais Pier sketchbook (Tate D04262, D04264, Turner Bequest LXXI 62a, 63a). There are colour trials of red and blue wash for the study at lower right of the image.
