Turner’s notes are set out in two groups, the upper one headed ‘Solo’ and the lower ‘Deluge’, with accompanying initials from his colour key. These are only partly legible and cannot be replicated here. Further study of the originals is required. Finberg did not attempt a transcription but read Turner’s headings only. Poussin’s Judgement of Solomon, of 1649, was acquired by Louis XIV in 1685. Its colouring is notably harsh and acid. For the painter’s Deluge, and Turner’s further comments on it, see folios 41 verso, 42 of this sketchbook (D04327, D04328).
