Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. For barges in this sketchbook, see note to folio 23 (D06094). Turner’s memorandum on this example is described by Wilkinson as ‘the practical artist [making] an unusually explicit note to himself’, and shows him picking up on effects that might help him to avoid pictorial monotony.
