In a pencil annotation to a copy of Finberg in Tate’s Library, Edward Croft-Murray deleted the ‘Possibly’ from Finberg’s tentative identification of St Catherine’s Hill, since confirmed by Hill. This is one of a sequence of views of the hill from different angles in this sketchbook, beginning with one of the same aspect from further away on folio 118 verso (D06322) if Turner was working backwards through the book. The ‘ruins on top’ are those of St Catherine’s Chapel.
