This view looks towards St Catherine’s Hill and Chapel from near the riverside meadows, approaching from Guildford. Another in the same direction from further away, near Guildford Mills, and made first if Turner was working his way backwards through the sketchbook, is on folio 116 verso (D06318). Hill notes of the present sketch that ‘a line denoting the reflection of the willow to the left tells us how calm the water was’.1
