Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Edward Croft-Murray, in pencil annotations to a copy of Finberg in Tate’s Library, was the first to recognise this as St Catherine’s Hill. Butlin and Joll note that it is the same subject as the oil sketch St Catherine’s Hill, Guildford (Tate N02676).1 The viewpoint from the lock on the Wey Navigation, found as Turner approached from Godalming, is described by Hill.
